Brandi Jo,
Just what does an economic disaster look like? California is a good place to start. They have tried to spend and tax their way out of horrible econnomic times and only made matters mind-numbingly worse.
And some Texas lawmakers cannot work fast enough to make us look like California.
FEDERAL PORK
A few liberal legislators yesterday called on the governor to accept the string-laden federal pork, regardless of the cost to taxpayers. That would only make things worse by forcing Texas taxpayers to pay for much bigger government. You don’t solve an economic crisis by increasing spending and hiking taxes. Not ever.
They support it because the “stimulus” money would force Texas to adopt bad policies the legislature and public have rejected for decades.
We must avoid the Californication of Texas. Gov. Perry and the Legislature must work to free the economy by slashing property taxes, limiting the growth of government, eliminating business taxes and easing up on costly mandates.
TEXAS FILM SUBSIDIES?
Bad economic policy certainly isn’t the exclusive domain of Democrats.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers (with the governor) is pushing legislation this week to take money from your pocket and give it to Hollywood (1-minute video update). Under the guise of “economic development” (of course), they would tax you and give the money to leggy starlets and loud-mouth producers. Yes, yes… California, Louisiana, Michigan and New Mexico all spend tax money like this. Those types of policies have also given those states far worse unemployment numbers, horrible budget situations and disastrous economies. Let’s not copy them.
Don’t force Texas taxpayers to “invest” in a politically-connected niche industry. Free capital by cutting taxes, and let families decide where to invest their dollars. Empowerment benefits everyone; subsidies, only the select few.
TAKE ACTION
Make sure your voice is heard. We’ve started two letters you can sign, add to, or modify, letting your legislators know where you stand.
Letter on federal stimulus spending.
Letter on film subsidies.
Now more than ever we need to make sure the voice of Texans is heard in the Capitol.
For Texas,

P.S. — Maybe the worst recent example of loud-mouth liberalism is coming from the Dallas Morning News’ publisher, Jim Moroney. While supporting campaign finance limits, he used the corporate resources of the DMN to push his political agenda. Here’s the commentary response we jointly issued with the Texas Conservative Coalition.

I think the writer needs to take a better look at California. The nation could learn a thing or two about what works. California is a great place to live. The economy has hit all of America but using tax dollars to do good, build infrastructure and create a better place to live, is the best way to help get us out of this economic crisis. It is just too bad that many people here in Texas don’t see this and are content with being behind the curve in creating a better place and solving our economic problem.
