In the Land of the Living Economic Gods

Houston, Texas — Yesterday I attended my first Mises Circle at the Hilton Post Oak in Houston, Texas. My friend and fellow Debra Medina crusader, Margie Raborn asked one day if I was attending and I said I didn’t know about the Mises Circle.

I signed up right away and traveled down to Houston by way of Marble Falls and San Antonio. I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know if it was a presentation on the Mises Institute or what.

The theme was the failure of the Keynesian State. The speakers list was dynamic. Mises Institute President Douglas French, who has written Speculative Bubbles – an account of the causes of booms and busts, started off the all day Keynsian bashing.

New York Times Best Selling author, Tom Woods went right into why we suffer the government’s relentless economic mongering. His latest book Meltdown isa great explanation of why we will continue to suffer booms and busts. In wrote in my notes he said he was so amazed at the Keynsian economists uncanny ability to predict the market… he said of course they can predict the market — they set it up to boom or bust with their arbitrary interest rate hikes and slashes.

Ron Paul shared his latest defeat in the house with the Haiti Bill.  Read the text here. What I got from his address during the Mises Circle is that we as citizens have no say in what goes on in Congress. He said he walked down to his seat and they give them what they are voting on for the day. The piece of paper said “expressing our condolences for Haiti” and then he reads the bill.

The bill calls for unlimited military occupation and monetary construction support for Haiti.

Do you want to be the savior of all the world? I don’t!!! Let the United Nations, OxFam and the like do their job with our tax deductible contributions NOT OUR MILITARY AND OUR TAX DOLLARS!!! Read the bill here.

David Gordon came on after lunch and talked about his books and the importance of reading and learning about Austrian economics and the great philosophers who strive to bring it to the forefront of economic liberty.

They saved the best for last with the great Lew Rockwell (I rode down the elevator with him – he was very friendly). My pen was ready for anything and everything that came out of this man’s mouth.

He started with the FACT that central banks destroy society after society. Economies are humans interacting with each other that cannot be legislated or ‘managed by experts’.

Lew Rockwell talked about our contribution to the world. Our struggle as individuals define our contributions to the world to make it a better place. Standing up to despotism and the capacity of self-management is a direct threat to the regime who wants to control our every move.

As I sat and listened intently on his every word, I was reminded of Debra Medina’s speech about Jose Bruzon who is an immigrant from Cuba. He told her that the people of Cuba have no dreams because everything is free in Cuba. Lew Rockwell talked about how we as a society are starting to give up our freedoms one at a time. “Once we stop imagining freedom, it will cease to exist.”

Economic Liberty is why we were there and what we all struggle to find.
